Do you need a copywriter?

Many years before I decided to be a copywriter I’m not even sure I knew what a copywriter was.

I hadn’t really thought too much about who created the words I read online and in brochures.

I realise now that I was not alone.

Of course, most people know they need a graphic designer or website designer, but they often forget about the words.

So, what is a copywriter?

A professional copywriter is someone who writes words that sell. They describe your clients’ pain points. And, most importantly, how you can solve their problems.

They might write your local paper ad copy or the words for your website.

A copywriter writes to inspire a response – to buy your stuff or call you to make an appointment.

Here are 5 reasons when it’s a good idea to hire a copywriter to help you with your business

  1. You don’t have time to write copy.

It goes without saying that you’re already busy doing all the things you need to do to keep your business going.

And it takes time to write good copy. It makes sense to bring in an expert to help pull together the words you need.

They’ll do it in half the time, and your project will be up and running before you know it.

  1. You find it hard to pull the words together.

If you’ve ever tried to write advertising copy it can be harder than you think. Especially when you’re close to your business.

It’s sometimes a challenge to know exactly what you should say to inspire the right response from your reader. That’s exactly what a copywriter is trained to do.

  1. ‘Optimised’ copy is a mystery to you.

If you’re writing for your website or for an online blog, it’s important to include the right keywords to help people (and search engines) find you. This also helps to make your marketing copy relevant to your audience.

It’s also about writing in a style that’s suitable for reading online. An experienced copywriter knows how to craft your website copy to make it easier for people to read.

They know how to write a good headline, snappy bullet points, and effective ‘calls to action’.

  1. You’re not sure how to strike the right ‘tone’ in your writing.

In the past, many people were taught to write business copy in a more formal style. But this type of writing doesn’t work for advertising copy. It’s boring and can stop people from reading all about your fabulous products and services.

You need to strike a conversational tone to keep people’s attention.

Of course, you still need to take care that your grammar and spelling are correct. People get distracted when these aspects of your writing are incorrect. So, hiring a copywriter to take care of these details can be worth it.

  1. You want to stand out from your competition.

Part of a copywriter’s job is to research your market and your competition. They’ll refine the words to describe how your business is different from others in your industry. It’s never a good idea to duplicate what others are saying.

Your copywriter will come up with fresh, new ways of describing what you and your company does.

Hiring an experienced copywriter can be a great investment in making your marketing dollars work harder.
