Website copy audit: Is your website sending the right message?

Clear messaging matters. In a world where attention spans are short and competition is fierce, your website has just seconds to make an impression.

The question is: is your message clear—or confusing?

A beautiful design won’t save you if your words aren’t working. That’s why I offer website audits focused specifically on clear, customer-focused messaging.

Website Copy Audit: Here’s how I do it—and why it matters.

  1. Start with the first impression: The Homepage Headline

My first step is to ask: Can a first-time visitor understand what you do and who you help in 5 seconds or less?

Many businesses waste prime real estate on vague taglines or clever phrases that don’t communicate value. I look for:

  • A clear explanation of what you offer
  • Language that speaks to a customer’s problem or goal
  • An immediate hook that keeps them scrolling
  1. Evaluate the Customer Journey

Your website should guide the visitor, not confuse them. I walk through the user flow from homepage to key service pages and look for:

  • Logical structure and intuitive navigation
  • Headlines that lead with benefits, not features
  • Clear calls to action at each step
  1. Identify the Messaging Voice

Does your site sound human, or like a corporate brochure? I evaluate whether your copy is:

  • Relatable and conversational
  • Free from jargon or overly technical terms
  • Consistent in tone and style
  1. Apply StoryBrand Principles

I love using the StoryBrand framework. Following their guide, I assess if your message positions the customer as the hero and your brand as the guide. I check for:

  • Clear articulation of the customer’s problem
  • Simple explanations of how your service solves it
  • A roadmap that shows what working with you looks like
  1. Review Calls to Action

A clear message needs a clear next step. I look for:

  • One strong, specific CTA per page (e.g., “Book a Consultation” vs. “Click Here”)
  • Visual hierarchy that draws the eye to the CTA
  • Repetition of the CTA throughout the page without being overwhelming
  1. Check for “We-We Syndrome”

Too many businesses talk about themselves on every page. I assess whether the copy overuses:

  • “We” and “Our” statements
  • Self-congratulatory language
Instead, I recommend shifting to “You” statements that centre the customer experience.

Words that convert start with clarity: getting on the right track with a website copy audit

Your website isn’t just a digital brochure—it’s your 24/7 salesperson. If your messaging isn’t clear, it’s costing you leads.

A website audit focused on clarity can transform your site from “just okay” to truly compelling.
